6 Things You Should Know About Dog Boarding

Buzz this
A dog is definitely a man's best friend. Not many people would disagree with this statement, especially if you own one. It becomes a great responsibility on your part to see that your canine gets the best of treatment. Over the years you must have taken good care of your pet; and hopefully you will continue to do so in future as well.

Making holiday travel plans could be a hectic job, especially when you have a pet canine. Dog boarding arrangements can get quite difficult and therefore, there are a few aspects that you should always consider before choosing the dog kennels.

  • One of the most important considerations in this regard is that of vaccination. Do make sure that your dog has received all the required vaccines. If your dog requires booster vaccinations, then be sure that you arrange for them at least a week prior to your dog boarding reservation date. This is because some dogs might display vaccination symptoms which may resemble canine kennel cough or Bordatella.
  • This may get you in trouble, as most boarding facilities would not accept dogs with any symptoms of illness. Do make sure that you ask the boarding facility, as to what vaccinations they need when you make your pet boarding reservation. Also double check to be sure that you have proper dog vaccination documentation.
  • Another major aspect in this regard is that of veterinarian dog check-up. Now, although it is not usually required by the boarding facilities, you should nevertheless have your vet do a checkup of your dog, especially if it is old, has chronic health problems, had surgery recently, or it is undergoing special medication requirements. This would save you from a lot of worries. After all you would not like to be surprised by your dog's illness, in the middle of a holiday.
  • Medication is another important factor that you cannot afford to miss. Make sure that the pet boarding kennel has been properly staffed for the special needs of your furry buddy.
  • Special diets should also be considered. While most dog boarding facilities arrange to keep dogs on their normal diet, it is good to ensure that you provide food in containers with written instructions.
  • An emergency is something that you should always be prepared to face. It is therefore a good idea to ensure that your dog boarding kennel features a plan for dog medical emergencies as well as natural disasters. In case the dog boarding facility is required to be evacuated, or in case of a dog health emergency does the kennel have proper facilities.
  • Most dogs tend to suffer from separation anxiety. So, if your dog is anxious, or in case this would be its first boarding experience, you should choose a pet boarding facility, which offers day care for your pet. It would also be a good idea, to visit the dog boarding kennel with your canine, a couple of times before your boarding reservation. This would help your animal to get acclimated with the boarding facility as well as the boarding staff.
