Save Money on Dog Care

Buzz this
As any dog owner can attest, dog care can be a most expensive proposition regardless of the breed or size of the dog involved. The seemingly endless number of ways in which a dog can negatively impact a pet owner's bank account is staggering in the depth of scope, but a wise and frugal pet lover can halt the financial bleeding with a bit of common sense. In an objective view of the topic a pet owner most likely will not save a great deal of money on dog care in one specific aspect, but the cumulative effect of small savings in several areas of dog care can amount to a small fortune over the life of a dog.

A pet owner looking to save money on dog care cannot be lazy or afraid to get their hands dirty in the pursuit of frugality, not can they go overboard in placing financial considerations ahead of the health and well-being of the dog. Common sense and compassion should dictate which circumstances are appropriate in which to pursue savings, and which are foolish and detrimental to the dog's care.

A pet owner can save considerable money on dog care by choosing a breed that requires little maintenance on a continual basis. Dogs that have genetic health issues should be avoided as pets if finances are a concern, as should be breeds that require ongoing professional grooming. Extremely large breed dogs can be quite costly to feed alone - a choice of dog should be decided with the future budget of the owner at the forefront.

Perhaps the best areas in which to save money on dog care are in the aspects of grooming and medications. A dog breed that can be easily bathed by the owner and that does not require professional periodic hair clipping will most certainly save money. A gentle dog breed that will allow it's owner to clip it's nails when necessary is also a large saving. In the area of medications, flee, tick and worm medicines can be purchased much more inexpensively on line than they can be obtained at your local veterinarian. Since these medicines are always a necessary component of dog ownership, even a small reduction in the price can add up to large savings in the long run.

A pet owner can save a fair amount of money on dog care by purchasing dog food in quantity at a reduced price, and ensuring proper storage to retain freshness. A great way to accomplish this is to purchase several 50 pound bags of dry dog food, fill one gallon plastic freezer bags, and store them inside of a plastic air-tight empty coffee can.

In every case, saving money on dog care simply comes down to reducing long-term associated costs without neglecting or depriving the dog of proper care.
