Not everyone is fortunate enough to be born into a good family. The same is true for dogs.
Yet, one little 9-month old girl who needed a home, finally got a break today, after a long string of just plain bad luck.
Lucy had been picked up in the street by Hernando County Animal Control and placed in a concrete cage on death row, where the policy is - if no one wanted her after 5 days, she would be put down.
The whereabouts of her previous owners will always be a mystery, which is typical for many abandoned dogs. There was however, one certainty about Lucy’s former owners; they abused her. All you had to do was walk past her cell at Animal Control to know that someone had hit her in the head, more than once. She cowered at the sight of approaching humans.
Yet, her eyes were sweet and there was something in them that told a different story; she had a great capacity to love.
An hour before Lucy was scheduled for “termination” we adopted her.
Within a few days, her personality began to emerge, and as suspected, she was a gentle, loving dog that bonded quickly with my daughter and the eight other dogs on our farm. Ball chasing with the pack became her daily routine, and her tail never seemed to stop wagging.
It wasn’t until we learned that Lucy had a taste for hunting our free-roaming chickens that we knew we couldn’t keep her.
All the local no kill shelters were full, so we put up a few ads on different websites, in the hope of finding her a good home.
After a number of phone interviews with prospective new owners, who all fell short of our responsible pet owner requirements, we were beginning to think that we might not be able to find the right family for Lucy. Until today.
A young family who had been looking for a small dog answered our add and came out to meet Lucy.
Even though she seemed afraid of her new potential owners, the family saw the same thing we did when we first met Lucy. It was that look in her eyes; the one that told you how much she just wanted to be loved.
In less than a year of life on this planet, Lucy had been through some pretty tough times. She had been beaten, abandoned and was within an hour of losing her life, before things turned around for her.
Maybe it was luck, maybe it was fate – we will never know. Regardless, all that matters is that Lucy now has a family to love, who we believe will always love her back.
When it comes to dog adoption, it doesn’t get any better than that.
